Life and other dramas

Ever have one of those days when everything is going perfectly? You wake up after a great night’s sleep, you have a great breakfast, you get done everything you need to get done and more, and you just enjoy the hell out of it? I had a day like that last weekend. I was smiling all the way through. Nothing bad got to me, everything good went my way, and even the day after it was still pretty damn decent.

Whenever something like that happens, you should know the opposite isn’t long in coming.

Technology is something we’ve come to rely on so much that we tend to feel lost without it. Take your phone, for example. Do you have those contacts saved elsewhere? Just how important are all those texts, videos, and pictures? Would you wince if it fell into the toilet bowl? Would you cry? Scream? Have a panic attack?

What about your internet connection and everything associated with it?

I recently lost a perfectly good router to facts of life. It just walked out the door and I had to wave good bye to it and resign myself to having to search for a new one. But then, as if by stroke of bad luck another router appeared to replace it. Not new, not even recent, but hey, free is free, right? Yeah… it’s true when they say: you get what you pay for. The problem with technology from ten years ago is that it wasn’t even so hot back then. Now there’s just no way for it to keep up. It died regularly every other night and twice on weekends. Tonight it died and could not be resuscitated by any method I was familiar with. You know it’s bad when you can’t even get to the settings to see what’s wrong.

So off I went to do what I should have done three weeks ago, and got a brand new router. It’s been plugged in for… *checks clock* half an hour now, and it’s running smooth as a kitten’s fur. I don’t want to pat myself on the back prematurely, I’m just happy to be able to type this LOL (Also glad that my mobile phone, which was new but defective so had to be replaced as well) is still allowing me to connect to the outside world via cancer causing radio waves. Good stuff.

Speaking of good stuff, how do you like my picture? Isn’t it brilliant? It was drawn for me by one of my good friends and every time I look at it, I grin like a fool. If I ever had a werewolf boyfriend, that is probably what he would look like. You can check out a bunch of her beautiful art and pictures at her Deviant Art page. Like me, she has a weakness for werewolves and shifters. ;)

There, now that I’ve tested everything, I can happily call it a day, take a nice, hot shower and curl up in bed for a nice long time. Sweet dreams!

On Pins and Needles

Yes, it’s almost that time. Shadowfever by Karen Marie Moning officially comes out on Tuesday. That means only three days left until all the questions are finally answered. I’m so anxious I keep checking my email every hour to see if Amazon shipped my pre-order yet. So far, it hasn’t. I’m so worried that someone will post something between now and the time I get to read it and will totally spoil it for me.

After the leaked chapters scare I don’t even want to check my Facebook. I stopped reading the teasers in KMM’s newsletters because of that, too. I know the book is twice as long as the others, so a few lines here and there can’t spoil much but better safe than sorry lol Not to mention that my friends have gone to the celebration and signing in NOLA (I’m so jealous I didn’t get to go!!) but at least they promised not to tell me any spoilers, even if I ask for them.

It’s a bittersweet wait. After five years, I’m anxious to find out what the heck is going on in Mac’s world, who the real players are – what they are – and whether Christian will finally make it out of the Silvers But at the same time , it’s like a dream will be ending, and I’ll wake up, look around, and be stuck in the same old same old, day after day. The Fever series has touched me, as it has many, many, many others. It’s brought fans together into a community so tightly knit that people who’ve never met before can come together and feel like sisters.

KMM will have another series following on the heels of Fever, set in the same world, and it can’t come soon enough. I’m sorry, I’m greedy that way. And there will (hopefully) be other stuff to look forward to -FeverCon 2011, KMM’s book tour, the much awaited Tarot deck, and of course Shadowsong (when is that shipping out again?) I suppose that will ease the blow somewhat.

So this is my confession. Hi, my name is Alianne Donnelly, and I am a Moning Maniac. Ya got a problem with that? ;)

A Little Blog Cleaning

I’ve created a static page for The Beast as well as novels published or in the works. You can click on the links in the sidebar for more info on each. The Beast has a table of contents of sorts and each chapter now has a link to the next one at the bottom for easy navigation so the entire list of 18 chapters doesn’t need to be there all the time. At some point in the future I might post more stories/novellas so it makes sense to do it this way.

I’ve also removed the music because, let’s face it, it sucked. The player was too big and half the songs disappeared. At some point I’ll have to figure out how to post a proper player (without getting into trouble with the copyright holders) and add music. Until then, enjoy the quiet lol there’s not enough of it in big cities these days.

More to come soon.

The Power of Dreams

It’s been proven that people go mad without dreams. Dreaming is our mind’s way of sorting through information our consciousness didn’t have time to while we were awake. It helps us make sense of things, come up with solutions to problems, or just take a break from reality for a while. I know my dreams are very much influenced by my waking life, but I’ve found it works the other way, too.

What I dream influences how I view the world, how I react to it, and in a small way, how it reacts to me. Well, sometimes it’s in a bigger way. And sometimes it’s not quite dreams, more like day dreams… translated onto the page, perhaps. This anecdote is true as I can make it (riddle yourself out of that one lol)

We had a tech guy come to the office where I work to switch some phone extensions. I was minding my own business, doing some work, writing some on the side, a sentence here and there, a paragraph or so then some “real” work. I was writing a scene for Blood Debts, the third in the Blood Series and since I’ve learned a couple of times in the past to back up early and often, I saved the file, sent it to myself, and printed it just in case.

The last two paragraphs I wrote were dialogue:

“Did we lose the signal?”

“I’m not getting anything anymore.”

I clicked on a different browser tab to go back to my work, only the page refused to refresh. I closed it and tried again – nothing. A second later my supervisor comes from the back where the tech is working on the phones and says, “Is your internet working?”

“No,” I say.

“Crap, the tech must have messed up the wires.”

Someone must have heard her and called help desk because five minutes of non-responsive internet later I get a call from them saying they “heard” we had internet problems. So we get into a big, complicated back and forth of checking the wires, the connection to the modem, the modem’s connection to the IP, and discover that everything is fine on our end. It’s our internet provider that’s having issues. No idea when it might be fixed so we inform everyone, half the office leaves, including the tech guy. I try to send out a text message but the attempt fails three times – my service provider is the same as the internet provider.

A half hour later, help desk calls back. Seems the problem was caused by an outage and should be fixed but they don’t know how well it will hold up. Seems the entire city was affected.

Of course, it could all just be coincidence….

…right? ;)

First off, Happy New Year!!!!

I wish you all the best in 2011, may all your dreams come true =D At my house we lit sparklers at midnight and the smoke alarm went off. We were so busy opening all the doors and windows that we forgot to toast the new year! But at least we all had a laugh.
